Webinar Highlights Project Execution and Power Availability as AI Data Center Constraints

BizClik convened representatives from Sitetracker, Accenture and Salesforce to examine the delivery handoffs that can delay AI-ready data center capacity from funded programme to operational infrastructure. Speakers identified project execution and power availability as central constraints on data center expansion.

  • Project handoffs can create a material gap between funded programmes and operational data center capacity.
  • Speakers identified project execution—not sales—as a key constraint on AI-ready data center delivery.
  • Electricity availability was described as the most significant project bottleneck.
  • Site selection increasingly depends on grid access, permitting, community considerations, cooling water and supply-chain complexity.
  • Early power planning and cross-functional coordination could become stronger determinants of project competitiveness.

BizClik’s webinar, “Building AI-Ready Capacity: Managing the Handoffs That Make or Break Data Center Projects,” focused on the gap between a funded data center programme and capacity that has reached operational service.

The panel, which included Sitetracker, Accenture and Salesforce, examined delivery risk at key project transitions: from site selection to a financeable programme, from design into construction, and from commissioning into operations. Michael Roach of Sitetracker characterised execution, rather than sales, as the more significant constraint for data center development.

Power availability was identified as a particularly material bottleneck. Brent Healy of Salesforce said electricity availability is the most significant constraint facing data center projects, with grid limitations affecting both site selection and the time required to move a project from planning into construction.

James Hebblethwaite of Accenture said site selection now requires evaluation beyond the site itself, including proximity to grid infrastructure, permitting timelines, local-community response, cooling-water availability and a more complex supply chain. These factors can determine whether a proposed campus can progress through development handoffs without material delay.

The panel’s conclusions suggest that competitive differentiation may increasingly depend on delivery discipline and early coordination of power, permitting and project stakeholders. This could increase the value of execution-management tools and of sites where grid access and regulatory processes are more predictable.

Почему это важно

The discussion reflects a potential shift in the sector’s binding constraint from demand and financing to the ability to deliver, interconnect and commission capacity on schedule. For developers, operators and customers, this raises the importance of securing power, permits and cross-functional delivery coordination early in the project lifecycle.
