US Data-Center Buildout Raises Demand for Critical-Facility Operations Staff

Rising US demand for AI infrastructure is intensifying the need for engineers and technicians to operate and maintain data-center physical infrastructure. The workforce constraint is emerging alongside a growing pipeline of facilities under construction and in planning.
- US AI-related data-center growth is increasing demand for critical-facility engineers and technicians.
- S1 cites about 2,700 operational US data centers, nearly 400 under construction and at least 1,500 in planning.
- The Digital Realty site described in Ashburn has operated for nine years and may host up to 120 people at one time.
- Availability metrics cited for Digital Realty are company estimates and targets, not independently verified site-level performance.
The US data-center buildout associated with AI demand is increasing pressure on the workforce required to operate critical facilities. Engineers and technical staff are needed around the clock to maintain power systems, cooling infrastructure, network infrastructure and the operating procedures that support high-availability environments.
Data Center Map figures cited by S1 put the US installed base at about 2,700 operational data centers, with nearly 400 facilities under construction and at least 1,500 in planning. These categories represent materially different project statuses: the facilities under construction and, particularly, those in planning should not be treated as operational capacity.
An operating Digital Realty facility in Ashburn, Virginia, illustrates the staffing intensity involved. S1 describes the site as having operated for nine years and occupying more than 90,000 square metres. Up to 120 people may be on site at a time, including about 50 direct employees; the remainder includes contract security staff and customer personnel.
Digital Realty estimates data-center availability at 99.999% and is targeting 99.9999%, according to S1. The company associates those levels with a reduction in annual downtime from roughly six minutes to about 30 seconds. These are Digital Realty’s stated estimates and targets, rather than an independently verified availability record for the Ashburn site.
As the construction pipeline expands, operational staffing could become a material scaling constraint alongside energy, equipment and construction. The reported shortage of experienced engineers and technicians may support higher labor costs, add to operating expenditure, and make the safe commissioning and operation of new facilities more challenging.
Data-center expansion depends on qualified operations staff as well as power, equipment and construction capacity. A shortage of experienced critical-infrastructure personnel could raise operating costs, increase commissioning and operational risk, and constrain operators’ ability to bring new facilities online safely.
