Thailand Weighs 8.8 GW of Data-Center Power Supply Against 35 GW of Requests

Редакция ЦОД:Главное

AI-led data-center growth is complicating power-demand planning in Thailand and Indonesia. Thailand has received data-center power requests totaling about 35 GW and is considering supplying about 8.8 GW, while Indonesian developers cite uncertainty over customers’ access to AI chips as a constraint on firm demand forecasts.

  • Thailand has received about 35 GW of data-center power requests, while about 8.8 GW is under consideration for supply.
  • The Thai figures refer to power requests and contemplated supply, not operating data-center capacity or approved grid allocations.
  • Thailand may introduce bank guarantees for data-center grid connections.
  • In Indonesia, uncertain customer access to AI chips is limiting developers’ ability to provide firm load forecasts to utilities.
  • Grid-capacity allocation could become more selective as AI-oriented data-center demand grows.

AI-oriented data-center development is making electricity-demand forecasting more difficult for power-sector stakeholders in Thailand and Indonesia, according to industry and energy-company representatives speaking in Jakarta.

In Thailand, data-center power requests total about 35 GW. Authorities are considering supply of about 8.8 GW. The figures describe requests for energy supply and capacity under consideration, rather than commissioned data-center capacity or firm, available grid allocations.

Thailand is also considering bank guarantees for data-center grid connections. Such a mechanism could help distinguish projects with stronger financial commitment from speculative connection requests before scarce grid capacity is reserved.

In Indonesia, developers said they cannot provide utilities with firm forecasts of future power demand because their customers’ access to AI chips remains uncertain. That uncertainty links data-center load planning not only to site development and grid interconnection, but also to the availability of the compute hardware required to support AI deployments.

For operators, developers and utilities, the reported gap in Thailand highlights a potential need for more rigorous demand validation before connection capacity is allocated. It could result in stricter prioritisation of applications, financial guarantees and more cautious utility treatment of projects whose underlying demand has not been confirmed.

Почему это важно

The gap between requested grid capacity and the volume under consideration for supply underscores that grid access is becoming a scaling constraint for AI-oriented data-center projects in Southeast Asia. It could drive tighter project screening, financial-security requirements and greater caution before utilities reserve capacity for developments without validated demand.
