Participants at South Korea’s second Hydrogen Economy Forum in Seoul discussed fuel cells and hydrogen turbines as potential onsite power sources for AI data centers facing grid-capacity constraints. The event was an industry and policy discussion, not the announcement of a specific data-center power project or procurement commitment.

  • AI data-center power demand was a central topic at Seoul’s second Hydrogen Economy Forum.
  • Fuel cells and hydrogen turbines were discussed as potential load-adjacent onsite generation where grid capacity is constrained.
  • Industry participants called for expanded procurement of clean-hydrogen generation and consistent policy support.
  • No specific hydrogen power project, capacity, contract or deployment timetable for a data center was disclosed.
  • Doosan Fuel Cell reported cumulative North American power-market orders above KRW 1 trillion since the start of the year, without identifying data-center exposure.

The Korean Academy of Engineering convened the second Hydrogen Economy Forum on September 21 in Yeouido, Seoul, bringing together about 150 representatives from parliament, government, industry, academia, research institutions and local authorities.

AI data centers were among the forum’s central topics, reflecting constraints on access to grid capacity. Participants presented fuel cells and hydrogen turbines as potential onsite-generation options capable of supplying stable electricity close to the load, rather than relying solely on network expansion and grid interconnection.

Hydrogen-industry representatives called for a larger volume of clean-hydrogen generation procurement and more consistent government policy. For data-center operators and power-market participants, the relevance is not an identified deployment but the growing alignment between AI-driven load growth and the hydrogen sector’s effort to establish demand for local clean-power generation.

The forum did not disclose capacity, cost, timetable, technology configuration or location for any specific onsite-generation asset serving a data center. Nor did it announce construction, commissioning, a procurement programme or a contract for a hydrogen-powered data-center facility.

Separately, Doosan Fuel Cell said its cumulative orders in the North American power market had exceeded KRW 1 trillion since the start of the year. The disclosure does not specify the composition of those orders, their delivery status, or any connection to data-center applications.

Почему это важно

The discussion highlights the search for low-carbon, load-adjacent power options for AI data centers where grid infrastructure is constrained. If interconnection bottlenecks persist, fuel-cell and hydrogen-turbine generation could emerge as a distinct supply segment, although scaling would depend on predictable policy support, clean-hydrogen availability and broader procurement mechanisms.
