Pentagon in talks on approximately $5bn Fluidstack loan for US data-center supply chain

The US Department of Defense is discussing an approximately $5bn loan to AI cloud startup Fluidstack through the Office of Strategic Capital. The proposed funding would target US supply-chain and manufacturing capacity for data-center components rather than the direct construction of new AI data centers.

Главное
  • The Pentagon and Fluidstack are negotiating an approximately $5bn Office of Strategic Capital loan.
  • The proposed funding is aimed at US data-center component supply chains and manufacturing, not direct AI data-center construction.
  • Google is providing a guarantee connected to Fluidstack’s use of Google TPU compute resources.
  • Fluidstack holds multi-year data-center leases in New York, Indiana, Louisiana and Texas.
  • No new data-center capacity or commissioning timeline has been disclosed in connection with the proposed loan.

The Pentagon is in discussions with Fluidstack over an approximately $5bn loan through the Office of Strategic Capital, according to a source cited in the underlying report. Google is providing a guarantee for the proposed financing, linked to Fluidstack’s use of Google TPU compute resources.

The intended use of proceeds is supply-chain resilience and manufacturing capacity for data-center-related components in the United States, rather than direct development of new AI data-center facilities. As a result, the proposed loan should not be interpreted as funding a defined pipeline of new data-center capacity.

Fluidstack has multi-year data-center lease agreements in New York, Indiana, Louisiana and Texas. The company has about 700 employees, all located in the United States.

If completed, the loan would be the largest issued by the Office of Strategic Capital since the office was created, according to the source. The office could provide more than $200bn of financing over the coming years, although the scope and allocation of that potential funding were not specified.

For the US data-center market, the proposed transaction could establish a precedent for more direct government support of the manufacturing and supply base behind AI infrastructure, rather than only compute platforms. Such support could affect the availability, cost and sourcing structure of critical data-center components. Its market impact remains uncertain, however, because the financing is still being negotiated and is not intended to bring new data-center capacity online directly.

Почему это важно

If agreed, the financing could signal a broader role for defense-linked public capital in the industrial base underpinning AI data-center infrastructure. It could support demand for domestically produced critical equipment and reduce import dependency, although no new data-center capacity is implied and the transaction remains under negotiation.
