NTT DATA Group and Anthropic are reportedly negotiating a new data center in the southern coastal area of Osaka Prefecture, potentially Anthropic’s first facility in Japan. The reported project remains unconfirmed by the companies, with a contract targeted for fiscal 2026 and partial operations envisaged from 2028.

  • The reported Osaka project remains at the negotiation stage and has not been confirmed by either company.
  • A contract is reportedly targeted for fiscal 2026, with partial operations envisaged from 2028.
  • Up to 500MW is a potential maximum power requirement, not confirmed live or contracted capacity.
  • Grid-supply timing may lead to early-stage use of fuel cells.
  • The reported construction-cost estimate and potential total investment estimate have different scopes.

NTT DATA Group and Anthropic are reportedly in discussions over a new data center in the southern coastal area of Osaka Prefecture. According to the report, NTT is coordinating development of the facility for Anthropic, which could become the US company’s first data center in Japan.

The parties are said to be targeting a contract during fiscal 2026, with partial operations planned from 2028. Neither NTT DATA Group nor Anthropic commented on the report, and no agreement, construction start or commissioning has been confirmed.

The facility’s potential maximum power requirement is reported at up to 500MW. That figure is a prospective upper limit rather than confirmed contracted or operational capacity. The construction-cost estimate is up to ¥1 trillion; separately, total investment could reach several trillion yen if GPU-server deployment is scaled up. These figures cover different scopes and should not be treated as equivalent.

Power availability appears central to the proposed development. The report indicates that obtaining 500MW of grid supply would take time, and that fuel cells are being considered as an early-stage alternative power source. If the project proceeds, this could reinforce demand for large-scale AI data-center and associated energy infrastructure in Kansai, while illustrating the commercial role of on-site or alternative generation where grid interconnection schedules lag compute deployment.

Почему это важно

If developed, the project could add a large new source of AI infrastructure demand in Kansai, spanning data-center capacity, power supply, cooling and GPU deployment. It also highlights grid interconnection as a potential constraint: the reported need to secure up to 500MW from the grid may require interim alternative generation, including fuel cells.
