Japan Gateway Infrastructure (NGI) is developing a retail data-center strategy around four facilities in Kanagawa and Kobe acquired from NEC.
NGI was established through affiliated funds of DigitalBridge and Japan Extensive Infrastructure. The company operates the four NEC-acquired data-center buildings, while NEC continues to use part of the space. NGI intends to sell the capacity not used by NEC to the market.
The company has also identified three potential avenues for expansion: new construction, acquisition of data centers, and refurbishment of facilities planned for closure. These are stated intentions rather than confirmed projects.
The strategy could increase the role of specialist infrastructure investors in Japan’s commercial data-center market. Rather than relying solely on greenfield supply, NGI is considering a mix of acquired assets, redevelopment and new construction. A retail-oriented model may provide additional placement options for customers beyond a purely hyperscale format.
Hiroshi Ogasawara joined NGI and became its president in July 2026.
NGI’s approach could support a broader secondary market for Japanese data-center assets by combining acquired capacity, potential refurbishment and selective new development. Its retail focus may add colocation options for customers whose requirements do not fit a hyperscale-only model.
