Murata Manufacturing is evaluating an expansion of multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) production in response to rapidly rising demand from AI servers and global data-center construction. The company is also assessing whether to accelerate its previously announced approximately JPY80 billion MLCC equipment-investment programme through the end of fiscal 2027.

  • Murata is evaluating additional MLCC production capacity rather than committing to a confirmed expansion.
  • The company is considering accelerating an approximately JPY80 billion MLCC equipment-investment programme through the end of fiscal 2027.
  • Murata’s Izumo plant could reach full utilisation during the current year, earlier than the prior expectation of 2030.
  • AI servers are estimated in the cited source to use 15,000–25,000 MLCCs, though the underlying configuration is unspecified.
  • The development could signal tighter passive-component procurement conditions in the AI-server supply chain before new capacity is available.

Murata Manufacturing is assessing additional MLCC manufacturing capacity as demand for components used in AI servers rises alongside global data-center construction.

Company president Noritsugu Nakajima said Murata is considering expansion in a region familiar with its manufacturing processes. The company is in discussions with production-equipment suppliers and is evaluating the acquisition of the required manufacturing space. It expects to settle the details of the expansion, including the investment amount, before reporting first-half results at the end of October.

Murata had previously outlined approximately JPY80 billion of investment in MLCC production equipment over the two-year period through the end of fiscal 2027. It is now assessing how far that investment schedule can be accelerated. The source does not specify how much of the programme has already been deployed, whether spending would be brought forward, or whether it would be allocated to a particular facility.

The company’s Izumo plant in Shimane Prefecture, Japan, had previously been expected to reach full utilisation by 2030. Murata now says full utilisation could be reached during the current year, although this remains a possibility rather than a confirmed operating outcome.

The source estimates that an AI server uses 15,000 to 25,000 MLCCs. While the methodology and server configuration behind that estimate were not disclosed, the range illustrates why accelerated AI-server deployment can materially increase demand for passive components.

For the data-center supply chain, Murata’s assessment is an indicator that server-component demand may be running ahead of earlier supplier production plans. Any expansion remains under evaluation, with no confirmed site, capacity addition, timetable or final investment amount disclosed. Until additional capacity becomes available, high utilisation at a major MLCC supplier could increase supply-constraint risk and reinforce the need for forward procurement planning among server manufacturers and infrastructure operators.

Murata also denied reports that it intends to discontinue automotive and general-purpose MLCC production.

Почему это важно

The move signals that AI infrastructure deployment is tightening demand not only for compute and power equipment, but also for passive components used in server supply chains. If Murata’s high utilisation persists before additional capacity is available, server manufacturers and infrastructure operators could face greater procurement-planning pressure.
