Mirai Communication Network targets hosting and data storage rather than high-density GPU workloads in Ogaki

In an interview, Mirai Communication Network outlined a regional data-center strategy centered on hosting, private cloud, data storage and local infrastructure in Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture. The operator said it receives almost no requests to deploy GPU servers, as its facility was not designed for high power-density workloads.

  • Hosting is Mirai Communication Network’s core and fastest-growing data-center business line.
  • About half of hosting usage is for government and university web servers; most of the balance is used by private companies.
  • The Ogaki facility is not positioned for high-density GPU-server deployments and receives almost no such enquiries.
  • The operator expects storage demand to grow with AI, digitalisation and network-camera data volumes.
  • Efficiency initiatives include groundwater-assisted cooling and incremental PUE improvements; cybersecurity and skills development remain key challenges.

Mirai Communication Network, which operates a data center in Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture, is prioritising hosting and local enterprise infrastructure over the high-density GPU deployments associated with large-scale AI infrastructure.

The company’s data-center business comprises housing, hosting—including cloud services—and network services. Hosting is its principal business line and fastest-growing revenue source, according to the company. Around half of hosting usage is attributed to web servers for government bodies and universities, with the remainder used mainly by private companies.

The operator said it receives almost no enquiries for GPU-server installations. Its facility is not a hyperscale site and was not designed for high power-density requirements, positioning it outside the market for intensive AI-training workloads.

Instead, the company expects demand for data storage to rise as AI, digitalisation and network cameras generate and process larger data volumes. This suggests a regional operator can address demand through private cloud, managed hosting and storage rather than through major GPU-related infrastructure investment.

On operations, Mirai Communication Network is pursuing incremental energy-saving measures and PUE improvement, including the use of Ogaki’s local groundwater resources to improve cooling efficiency. It described PUE improvement in 0.1-point increments as part of these continuing efficiency efforts.

Cybersecurity and the development of qualified personnel are the company’s principal operational challenges. For regional facilities, these operational capabilities may be at least as consequential as participation in the competition for high-density AI capacity.

Почему это важно

The interview illustrates the segmentation of Japan’s data-center market: regional operators may retain a defensible role without competing for AI-training deployments, focusing instead on private cloud, data sovereignty-oriented hosting, storage growth and proximity to local users. This could further differentiate facilities by power density, energy availability, connectivity and workload profile.
