Microsoft’s Revised Mount Pleasant Data Center Campus Plan Clears Planning Commission

Microsoft has revised its planned data center campus expansion in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, reducing the planned data center building count from nine to seven while increasing total planned building area to more than 5.8 million square feet. The Mount Pleasant Plan Commission unanimously approved the amended site plan on October 14; a Village Board vote was still pending.
- Microsoft’s amended Mount Pleasant expansion plan calls for seven planned data center buildings, down from nine.
- Planned building area rises to more than 5.8 million square feet from just over 5.2 million square feet in the earlier approved phase plan.
- The stated area includes data center buildings, offices and guardhouses, but excludes two planned utility substations.
- The Plan Commission approved the amendment unanimously, but Village Board consideration remained pending.
- No MW capacity, CAPEX, substation rating, construction schedule or commissioning date has been disclosed.
Microsoft has submitted a revised site plan for the expansion of its data center campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin. The amended plan reduces the number of planned data center buildings to seven from the nine buildings approved by the Village Board in January.
Despite the lower building count, the planned building footprint has increased. The amended phase includes more than 5.8 million square feet of building space, compared with just over 5.2 million square feet in the earlier approved plan. The more than 5.8 million-square-foot figure covers the data center buildings, offices and guardhouses; it does not include two utility substations planned for the site.
The updated plan also includes an office and storage building, a guardhouse and two substations. Microsoft has said the redesign is intended to accelerate development and provide faster access to increased capacity, rather than represent a reduction in its ambitions for the campus. The company said it would keep the community informed before vertical construction begins.
The Mount Pleasant Plan Commission unanimously approved the amendment on October 14, 2026. The revised plan still requires consideration by the Mount Pleasant Village Board, and planning-commission approval does not constitute final approval.
For data center operators and infrastructure investors, the change highlights a common campus-planning distinction: fewer planned structures do not necessarily indicate a smaller project. Larger individual buildings and a revised site layout could reduce phased-construction complexity and help prepare a site more quickly for compute deployment. However, Microsoft has not disclosed planned or operational IT load in MW, substation capacity, CAPEX, construction timing or an in-service date, so the effect on available data center capacity cannot be quantified.
The amended plan also lowers the estimated taxable value per acre to around $7.7 million from around $10 million in the original plan. This reflects a more conservative planning methodology and should not be read as confirmation of lower actual investment.
The revision illustrates how large data center campuses can be reconfigured around fewer, larger buildings rather than a higher building count, potentially simplifying phased delivery and supporting faster access to planned capacity. Building count alone is therefore not a reliable measure of campus scale or development pace.
