Kioxia and SanDisk plan to jointly invest more than $31 billion in Japan through 2032 to expand NAND technology and manufacturing capacity. The planned programme is focused on their facilities in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, and Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture, including next-generation 3D BiCS FLASH development.

Главное
  • Kioxia and SanDisk have announced planned joint investment of more than $31 billion in Japan through 2032.
  • The programme targets technology and manufacturing expansion at facilities in Yokkaichi and Kitakami.
  • Next-generation 3D BiCS FLASH development is included in the stated investment scope.
  • The announcement concerns planned investment, not operating capacity or confirmed production output.
  • Potential data-center relevance is through future enterprise SSD and NAND supply for AI-driven storage demand.

Kioxia and SanDisk have announced plans to jointly invest more than $31 billion in Japan through 2032, equivalent to approximately ¥5 trillion according to S1. The stated programme covers expanded technology capabilities and manufacturing capacity, rather than capacity already commissioned or spending already incurred.

The companies intend to focus the investment on their factories in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, and Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture. The programme also includes development of the next generation of 3D BiCS FLASH.

For data-center operators and infrastructure buyers, the announcement is relevant to the storage layer of AI infrastructure. Training and inference workloads are increasing demand for enterprise SSDs and NAND products that combine high performance with energy efficiency. If the planned investment is executed, it could strengthen technology development and supply availability for server and storage deployments.

The source does not disclose the allocation of the planned investment between the two sites, manufacturing expansion and R&D, nor does it provide NAND or SSD output volumes, specifications, new-line schedules or commissioning dates. As a result, the impact on supply, pricing and deployment timelines cannot yet be quantified.

S1 also reports that the Kioxia-SanDisk joint-venture agreement has been extended through 2034. That reported extension is not accompanied by a primary document or a full calendar date.

Почему это важно

The programme is relevant to data-center supply chains as AI training and inference increase demand for high-performance, energy-efficient enterprise SSDs and NAND storage. If implemented, the investment could support NAND technology development and supply for server and storage systems, although no output volumes, product specifications, delivery timing or pricing effects have been disclosed.
