Kioxia and SanDisk have announced plans to invest more than $31 billion, or about ¥5 trillion, in Japan through 2032, conditional on government support. Separately, Kioxia plans a Fab3 facility at its Kitakami site, targeting the start of operations in fiscal 2029.

  • The more-than-$31 billion Japan investment programme is planned through 2032 and remains conditional on government support.
  • Fab2 at Kitakami reportedly began producing 10th-generation BiCS FLASH in July 2026.
  • Kioxia is targeting fiscal 2029 for Fab3 operations at Kitakami; this is not a confirmed construction or commissioning milestone.
  • Kioxia has begun shipping 332-layer NAND samples for AI data-center operators.
  • The development concerns NAND and SSD supply for data-center storage rather than new data-center capacity.

Kioxia and SanDisk said they plan to invest more than $31 billion—about ¥5 trillion—in Japan through 2032, subject to government support. The proposed programme is aimed at expanding advanced flash-memory production and technology development.

The companies reported that production of 10th-generation BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory began at Fab2 at Kioxia’s Kitakami site in July 2026. Kioxia has also begun shipping samples of 332-layer NAND memory to AI data-center operators.

Separately, Kioxia plans to build Fab3 at its Kitakami facility in Iwate Prefecture, with a target for operations to begin in fiscal 2029. This is a planned facility and target operating date; the available information does not establish that construction has started or that capacity has been commissioned.

For data-center infrastructure markets, the significance is in the storage supply chain. If implemented, the investment programme could reinforce Japan’s NAND manufacturing base and increase the availability of high-density flash memory for SSDs serving AI data-center and enterprise-storage workloads. No production-capacity figure has been disclosed for Fab2, Fab3 or the wider programme.

Kioxia and SanDisk have also extended their joint-venture agreement for the Yokkaichi plant through December 2034.

Почему это важно

The programme could support the supply of high-density SSD storage used for AI datasets, inference, retrieval-augmented generation and enterprise infrastructure. It is a storage supply-chain development for data-center operators, not an announcement of new data-center capacity.
