Korea Investment Corporation has outlined plans to expand its data-center investment activity, according to comments by its representatives at a forum in New York. The fund identified the United States, China and Europe as priority markets for capital deployment.
KIC characterises data centers as strategic infrastructure within its investment approach. Its representatives estimated the potential global digital-infrastructure market at more than $1 trillion, although the methodology, time horizon and precise scope of that estimate were not disclosed.
Alongside geographic priorities, KIC said it will focus on energy efficiency and the transition to renewable energy. For developers and operators, that focus could increase the importance of projects able to demonstrate efficient operations, resilient power supply and renewable-energy use.
The announcement concerns investment intent rather than completed transactions, constructed facilities or commissioned capacity. KIC has not disclosed an investment budget, target operators or assets, investment timing, or planned data-center capacity.
The statement adds support to the view that institutional investors are increasingly treating data centers as a strategic infrastructure asset class rather than conventional commercial real estate.
