Hyosung Heavy Industries has announced ₩386.5 billion in contracts to supply ultra-high-voltage transformers for two new AI data centers in the United States, ordered by two undisclosed US Big Tech companies. The contracts cover 765 kV equipment for a southern US site and 345 kV equipment for a northern site.
- Hyosung announced ₩386.5 billion in transformer supply contracts for two new US AI data centers.
- The southern US project is specified for 765 kV equipment, while the northern project is specified for 345 kV equipment.
- The contracts highlight transmission- and regional-grid equipment as a critical part of AI data-center development.
- The customers, sites, facility power capacity, delivery schedule and commissioning timeline were not disclosed.
- Hyosung is expanding transformer production in Memphis and has formed a North American high-voltage circuit-breaker joint venture with Quanta, but neither activity has been directly linked to these orders.
Hyosung Heavy Industries said on September 15 that it had secured contracts worth a combined ₩386.5 billion to supply ultra-high-voltage transformers for two new AI data centers in the United States.
The southern US project accounts for ₩220 billion of the total and is to receive 765 kV transformer equipment. A second project in the northern United States accounts for ₩166.5 billion and is to receive 345 kV equipment. Hyosung did not identify the two US Big Tech customers or disclose the specific data-center locations.
For data-center developers and power-system operators, the contracts illustrate the grid-infrastructure requirements associated with new AI-oriented campuses. High-voltage transformers are central to connecting large loads to transmission and regional networks and to providing the electrical infrastructure needed for reliable operation. The order may reinforce indications that supply chains for high-voltage transformers, switching equipment and grid-stability systems could become a constraint on AI data-center expansion.
The company is expanding its ultra-high-voltage transformer plant in Memphis, Tennessee. Separately, it formed a joint venture with Quanta in July to manufacture ultra-high-voltage circuit breakers in North America. The available information does not establish whether either initiative will supply these specific contracts.
Hyosung reported cumulative new orders of about ₩9.3 trillion through the end of August and raised its annual order target to ₩12 trillion from ₩8.4 trillion. Separately, Goldman Sachs projects US data-center power demand to grow at an average annual rate of 15% through 2030, with approximately $50 billion of investment estimated for new power infrastructure to support that growth. Those figures are third-party market estimates, rather than parameters of Hyosung’s two contracts.
The awards underline how AI data-center development is driving demand beyond compute infrastructure into transmission- and grid-level equipment. The use of 765 kV and 345 kV transformers points to the importance of high-voltage grid infrastructure in connecting and supporting large new data-center loads, although the facilities’ power capacity and delivery schedules remain undisclosed.
