  • Hitachi has announced a timber-based model in its Flexible Design Container small-data-center range.
  • Timber is used in primary structural elements, including columns and beams.
  • Hitachi positions the modular product around lower deployment costs and shorter construction cycles.
  • The company claims Class I seismic safety, a service life of more than 30 years and an estimated 20-tonne CO2-reduction effect.
  • Capacity, power demand, PUE, pricing and confirmed deployments have not been disclosed.

Hitachi has introduced a wooden model in its Flexible Design Container line of small data centers. The modular design uses timber in primary load-bearing components, including columns and beams.

The company says the product is designed to reduce deployment cost and construction time. It also states that the facility can be installed on unused space at corporate sites without the need for large-scale power infrastructure. This should not be interpreted as eliminating the facility’s power-supply requirements.

Hitachi claims the design meets the highest seismic safety classification, Class I, and has a service life of more than 30 years. The company also cites gas fire-suppression systems, intrusion protection and access controls. It estimates a 20-tonne CO2-emissions reduction effect, although it has not disclosed the calculation methodology, baseline case or assessment period.

For the small and edge data-center segment, a timber-based modular structure could provide a point of differentiation where deployment speed, site constraints and local acceptance are material considerations. However, the market impact remains difficult to assess: no IT capacity, power consumption, PUE, pricing, commercial-availability date, customer information, delivery geography or confirmed installations have been disclosed.

Почему это важно

The launch points to continued development of modular edge and local data-center formats using alternative structural materials. If Hitachi’s claims on cost, deployment time and urban-site integration are validated in practice, the design could broaden deployment options for small facilities at industrial sites and near residential areas.
