Grid operators highlighted as AI data-center demand exposure, not a new infrastructure project

A Simply Wall Street investment review identified Elia Group and National Grid as power-network operators that could benefit from rising electricity demand from AI and hyperscale data centers. The review cites Microsoft’s disclosure of more than US$130 billion in new data-center lease agreements, but does not announce a specific data-center build, grid connection or new commissioned capacity.

  • The review is an investment assessment, not a data-center or grid-project announcement.
  • Microsoft’s cited lease disclosure exceeds US$130 billion, but has no stated geography, capacity, timing or counterparties.
  • Elia Group’s reported €11.9 billion of available liquidity accompanies a CAPEX programme through 2028; no data-center-specific allocation is disclosed.
  • Grid interconnection availability and regulated network delivery could affect the timing of AI and hyperscale data-center deployment.
  • No new data-center capacity, connection capacity, individual network-project CAPEX or commissioning has been confirmed.

A Simply Wall Street review published on 13 October highlighted Elia Group and National Grid as potential beneficiaries of rising power demand from AI and hyperscale data centers. This is an investment-exposure assessment rather than an announcement of a data-center development, a grid interconnection agreement or newly operational infrastructure.

The review links the theme to Microsoft’s reported disclosure of more than US$130 billion in new data-center lease agreements. However, the cited disclosure includes no detail on timing, geography, capacity, counterparties or delivery status. It therefore does not establish new commissioned data-center capacity or specific associated grid works.

Elia Group operates high-voltage networks in Belgium and Germany. The review refers to a record CAPEX programme through 2028 and reports €11.9 billion of available liquidity, without providing the programme’s monetary value or allocating expenditure to data-center-related projects. It also cites revenue of €1.7 billion for Elia Transmission, €3.1 billion for 50Hertz Transmission and €86 million for international activities.

National Grid operates electricity and gas transmission and distribution networks in the UK and the northeastern United States. The review characterises its networks and substations as serving, or being positioned to serve, hyperscale and AI data-center connections. Reported revenue figures include £7.6 billion in New York, £4.2 billion in New England, £2.9 billion in UK Electricity Transmission and £1.9 billion in UK Electricity Distribution.

For data-center developers and investors, the central implication is that grid execution may become a limiting factor in AI infrastructure scaling. Network capital programmes and interconnection processes could constrain deployment timetables, while higher connected load could potentially expand the regulated asset bases of electricity-network operators. These are market inferences, not confirmation of individual projects or connections.

Почему это важно

Data-center expansion translates into demand for transmission, distribution, substations and grid interconnections. The review underlines that regulated network investment programmes, connection availability and regulatory execution could influence data-center deployment schedules alongside the capital spending of data-center operators.
