Google has outlined an approach to powering rapidly growing AI workloads in which data-center energy assets and operations play a more active role in supporting the grid. Speaking at Data Center World Power 2026 in Houston, Tom Garvens, Google’s vice president of advanced technology innovation, highlighted BESS, load management and more standardized utility-hyperscaler interfaces.

Главное
  • Google described BESS and load management as components of a more grid-interactive AI data-center model.
  • Google reported more than 3 quadrillion AI tokens processed monthly and a sevenfold increase in compute demand from May 2025 to May 2026.
  • Google said it is investing with utilities to increase grid capacity.
  • Google, Meta, Microsoft and Nvidia are developing an interface specification for utility-hyperscaler interaction.
  • No specific data-center project, BESS capacity, grid-upgrade scope or deployment timetable was disclosed.

Google is positioning AI data centers as more active participants in power-system operations, rather than solely as large and inflexible electricity loads.

At Data Center World Power 2026 in Houston, Tom Garvens, Google’s vice president of advanced technology innovation, described strategies intended to supply rapidly expanding AI workloads while enabling reserve and stored-energy assets to support the wider grid. The company is also adapting data-center hardware and software for more predictable and flexible interaction with grid operators and utilities.

Google said it now processes more than 3 quadrillion AI tokens per month and estimated that compute demand increased sevenfold between May 2025 and May 2026. Against that demand trajectory, the company views battery energy storage systems as a critical element of campus projects, both for storing energy on site and smoothing rapidly changing loads.

The company also said it is investing alongside utilities to expand grid capacity. Separately, Google, Meta, Microsoft and Nvidia are working on an interface specification intended to govern interaction between utilities and hyperscalers.

For the data-center and energy-infrastructure market, the strategy points to potential demand for BESS, load-management systems, power electronics, power architectures and software that coordinates data-center operations with the grid. Standardized utility-hyperscaler interfaces could reduce interconnection timelines and risks for large AI campuses, although the practical specifications and scale of adoption have not been disclosed.

The presentation described strategy and technology direction rather than the commissioning of a specific data center, BESS installation or grid expansion.

Почему это важно

Grid capacity and peak-demand management are becoming central constraints on large-scale AI data-center development. Google’s approach suggests a shift from passive backup-power provisioning toward BESS, flexible load management and standardized coordination between hyperscalers and utilities; however, the source does not disclose implementation scale, technical parameters or deployment timing.
