Google has announced a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy for 3.59 GW of electricity supply in the PJM region, intended to support demand growth tied to AI and data centers. About 890 MW of the contracted volume is expected to come from additional nuclear capacity enabled by planned upgrades.
- Google’s announced agreement covers 3.59 GW of electricity supply in PJM over 20 years.
- About 890 MW of the contracted volume is expected to be additional nuclear capacity.
- Constellation plans to invest more than $4.3 billion across 11 nuclear generating units in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
- First electricity from an upgraded plant is expected in 2028; the upgrades and additional capacity are not yet operational.
Google has entered into a 20-year electricity supply agreement with Constellation Energy covering 3.59 GW in the PJM region. The agreement is positioned as support for Google’s growing power demand associated with AI and data-center infrastructure.
Constellation plans to invest more than $4.3 billion in new equipment and technologies across 11 nuclear generating units it owns in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The planned work is intended to improve thermal efficiency and provide additional firm generation.
Approximately 890 MW—about one quarter of the contracted supply—is expected to be delivered through additional nuclear capacity. The first electricity from an upgraded plant is expected in 2028. Neither the additional capacity nor the upgrades should be treated as operational: the agreement and investment programme have been announced, while the upgrades and associated generation remain planned.
For data-center operators and hyperscalers, the transaction illustrates the increasing importance of securing long-duration power supply alongside the build-out of AI infrastructure in constrained grid regions. The planned upgrades suggest that existing nuclear fleets may offer one pathway to add large volumes of stable capacity, although delivery depends on completion of the upgrade programme and commencement of supply.
The agreement signals that long-term access to firm, carbon-free generation is becoming a strategic component of AI data-center expansion. It also points to uprates and efficiency improvements at existing nuclear assets as a potential route to add substantial stable generation capacity, rather than relying solely on new-build generation.
