  • GlobalFoundries and Marvell announced an expanded silicon-photonics manufacturing and packaging collaboration.
  • GlobalFoundries plans to support wafer fabrication, electro-optical integration and precision packaging, including through Fotonix.
  • Marvell intends to develop and scale next-generation pluggable transceivers and CPO solutions.
  • The target market is optical interconnect infrastructure for AI data centers and hyperscale cloud deployments.
  • No production volumes, commercial timelines, customers, financial terms or confirmed deployments were disclosed.

GlobalFoundries and Marvell Technology have announced a deeper strategic collaboration in silicon photonics, extending their work across manufacturing and packaging for next-generation optical interconnect products.

Under the announced arrangement, GlobalFoundries plans to provide support spanning wafer fabrication, electro-optical component integration and precision packaging, including through its Fotonix platform. Marvell intends to advance development and volume production of next-generation pluggable optical transceivers and co-packaged optics (CPO) solutions based on GlobalFoundries’ manufacturing platform.

The stated objective is to accelerate commercial deployment of high-density, low-latency and low-power silicon-photonics interconnects in AI data centers and hyperscale cloud environments. For operators of large AI and HPC clusters, optical interconnects are increasingly relevant as copper links face distance, attenuation and power-consumption constraints.

The collaboration could indicate a further move toward tighter integration between photonic-chip fabrication, electro-optical assembly and CPO product development. That integration may broaden future interconnect technology options for large-scale AI infrastructure, but the announcement does not establish commercial deliveries or deployments.

Neither company disclosed financial terms, production volumes, commercialization schedules, technical product specifications or named customers. The announcement describes an expansion of cooperation and the companies’ intentions rather than confirmed volume manufacturing, shipments or live data-center installations.

Почему это важно

AI and HPC clusters are increasing requirements for bandwidth, latency and energy efficiency in data-center interconnects. Combining silicon-photonics manufacturing, electro-optical integration and co-packaged optics development could support broader deployment of optical links in large AI clusters, although commercialization timing and production volumes have not been disclosed.
