Finland’s data-center pipeline exceeds €67bn, raising power-supply questions

Редакция ЦОД:Главное

Finland has attracted more than €67bn in data-center construction investment across operational assets and projects at feasibility, planning and investment-decision stages, according to figures attributed to the Finnish Industrial Federation. Proposed developments include a Sesterce campus backed by more than €10bn of planned investment and a 230MW atNorth project.

  • Finland’s reported data-center investment pipeline exceeds €67bn across operational and pre-development stages.
  • Only €2.2bn of the reported investment is operational; most remains in feasibility, planning or investment-decision stages.
  • Sesterce intends to invest more than €10bn in a Finnish campus and has a long-term compute target exceeding 1GW of IT capacity.
  • atNorth is planning a 230MW project, with the capacity basis unspecified.
  • Grid capacity, electricity pricing and environmental permitting could become material constraints on project delivery.

Finland’s data-center development pipeline exceeds €67bn in aggregate investment, according to figures attributed to the Finnish Industrial Federation. The total spans assets already in operation as well as projects at earlier development stages, underscoring the scale of announced and planned capacity entering the country’s market.

Of the reported total, €2.2bn relates to data-center investments already operational. A further €14.7bn is in feasibility work, €22.3bn is in planning, and €27.9bn is at the investment-decision stage. These categories total €67.1bn, broadly consistent with the stated figure of more than €67bn, subject to rounding.

Among the individual proposals, Sesterce announced on 8 October that it intends to invest more than €10bn in a data-center campus on the site of a former paper mill in Finland. The company’s long-term compute-capacity target exceeds 1GW of IT capacity. atNorth is planning a 230MW project, although the available information does not specify whether that figure refers to IT load or another measure of project capacity.

Applied Digital is also cited as planning a gigawatt-scale facility, but no numerical capacity, location, delivery timetable, power-supply parameters or construction status is provided. Alibaba Cloud is named among the companies associated with new and planned projects, without further project details.

The build-out could increase demand for grid interconnection capacity, power supply and industrial land. Finland’s cold climate, renewable generation and available industrial sites could support further pipeline growth, but the reported project volume also raises questions over adequacy of electricity supply, power pricing and environmental approvals. A Google project is reported to have been paused over environmental impact, though no further information on that development was provided.

The scale of the pipeline could reinforce Finland’s position as a major European data-center market, while increasing competition for grid connections, power capacity and industrial sites. Project delivery will depend on the power system’s ability to accommodate new demand and on environmental permitting.
