ERCOT is applying its Batch Zero process to assess the maturity of large-load projects for transmission planning as Texas faces an unprecedented volume of AI, hyperscale and other power-demand requests. Most of the proposed load in the queue is associated with data centers, but ERCOT’s figures indicate that only a small portion has reached advanced interconnection milestones.

  • ERCOT is using Batch Zero to assess project maturity for transmission planning.
  • Nearly 89% of more than 438 GW of proposed large loads tracked in June was associated with data centers.
  • ERCOT’s April 2026 summary showed 321 GW of 445.8 GW in large-load applications had not submitted studies.
  • Only 5.9 GW of large loads was observed energized; 3.2 GW more was approved for energization but not operational.
  • Interconnection requests are not a forecast of built or operational data-center capacity.

ERCOT is tightening its assessment of large-load interconnection proposals through Batch Zero, using the process to distinguish projects with sufficient maturity, technical information and commitments from early-stage requests when planning transmission infrastructure.

The scale of the queue is heavily shaped by data-center demand. In June, ERCOT said it was tracking more than 438 GW of proposed large loads, with nearly 89% associated with data centers. By August 3, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said ERCOT was considering approximately 474 GW of connection requests, roughly 90% from data centers. Those requests were more than five times the system’s record peak demand.

An April 2026 ERCOT summary recorded 445.8 GW of large-load applications through 2033. Of that total, 321 GW had no studies submitted to ERCOT and a further 93.7 GW was under ERCOT review. Applications totaling 22 GW had met applicable Section 9.5 requirements.

The contrast with energized load is material. ERCOT reported 5.9 GW of observed energized large loads, while another 3.2 GW had been approved to energize but was not yet operational. The requested volumes therefore should not be treated as either built capacity or a forecast of projects that will ultimately be delivered.

For the Texas data-center market, the nominal interconnection pipeline appears substantially larger than likely near-term energization. This could increase the importance of verified grid interconnection progress and technical readiness in underwriting data-center developments, while making comparisons between developer pipelines more difficult where requested capacity is presented as deliverable capacity.

Batch Zero is intended to provide a firmer basis for transmission planning than relying on historical application realization rates. Its use reflects the need to separate mature, grid-ready projects from speculative or early-stage demand submissions in a queue dominated by data-center proposals.

Почему это важно

The Texas interconnection queue should not be read as a forecast of commissioned data-center capacity. For operators, developers and investors, demonstrated interconnection readiness, technical documentation and compliance with ERCOT requirements could become more important differentiators as grid capacity is allocated.
