Equinix announced the launch of the Equinix Enhanced Performance Innovation Center (EPIC), a global programme intended to support the testing, buildout and deployment of high-density AI infrastructure.
EPIC sites are located inside operating Equinix data centers and provide liquid-cooling infrastructure that is ready for production use. Customers can evaluate high-density AI systems and integrated liquid-cooling stacks under real operating conditions, with support from Equinix specialists and technology partners.
The programme is currently available at five locations: London, Paris, Frankfurt, Osaka (OS3) and Sydney. Equinix plans to expand the EPIC footprint in 2027, although the planned sites and scale of that expansion have not been disclosed.
For operators and enterprise infrastructure teams, the value lies in testing the interaction between cooling, compute, networking, power delivery and operational practices before a production rollout. This can help address integration and operating risks associated with high-density AI deployments, where conventional cooling approaches may be insufficient.
More broadly, the programme suggests a growing role for data center operators as environments for integrated validation of equipment, cooling systems and operational processes alongside OEMs and other technology partners, rather than solely providers of colocation space and power.
EPIC gives enterprise customers and technology partners an operating environment to validate the integration of liquid cooling, compute, networking, power and operational processes before deploying high-density AI infrastructure at scale. The model could reduce technical and operational risk as AI and HPC rack densities outgrow the limits of conventional cooling approaches.
