  • The scheme did not progress beyond permitting because environmental-review and grid-connection information was not provided.

East Gate has withdrawn its application for a planned 120 MW data center in Travagliato, Lombardy, ending the project before it advanced beyond permitting.

The application was withdrawn 10 months after submission, according to the source. The municipality had not received the documentation required for environmental review and assessment of the proposed grid connection. Travagliato mayor Renato Pasinetti said the province would need to close the connection application.

The scheme, developed by The Blossom Avenue Partners, was planned for a 130,000-square-metre site in an industrial area outside the town. The 120 MW figure represented total proposed project capacity, not operational or commissioned capacity.

The municipality had previously expressed strong opposition to the proposal, while an online petition against the development attracted nearly 10,000 signatures. A consultant’s estimate commissioned by the developer’s partners projected that the project could have contributed more than €11 million to the local budget, including €524,715 in compensation for development of agricultural land. That estimate was not a confirmed public receipt.

For Italy’s data-center market, the case illustrates how environmental substantiation and grid-interconnection materials can become gating items for large campuses before permits are secured. It also suggests that developers must address local opposition alongside environmental and power-connection requirements.

Почему это важно

The withdrawal removes the proposed 120 MW project from the local development pipeline at the approvals stage and highlights the execution risk facing large data-center schemes when environmental and grid-interconnection evidence is incomplete. Site availability and proposed capacity alone do not secure deliverability.
