Dell Technologies has warned that shortages of critical AI-infrastructure components—particularly memory and HDDs—could persist for more than five years if Agentic AI demand continues to grow rapidly. The warning comes as Seagate and Western Digital allocate substantial portions of future Nearline HDD supply through long-term customer agreements.

  • Dell says shortages of selected AI-infrastructure components could extend beyond five years if Agentic AI demand continues to grow rapidly.
  • Memory and HDDs are Dell’s primary areas of concern; the company has also cited constraints in DRAM, NAND and certain CPUs.
  • Most of Seagate’s Nearline HDD supply is allocated through long-term agreements through 2028.
  • Western Digital says most 2027 supply is under long-term agreements, with some 2028 and limited 2029 supply also contracted.
  • The trend could require earlier storage-capacity procurement and stronger supply-chain planning by data-center operators.

Dell Technologies is flagging memory and HDDs as the most exposed component categories in an AI-infrastructure supply chain increasingly shaped by rapid Agentic AI demand.

In discussions with Morgan Stanley analysts, Dell COO Jeff Clarke said shortages of some critical components could last for more than five years under a scenario of continued rapid Agentic AI growth. He identified memory and HDD supply as the principal concern. On Dell’s second-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call, Clarke had also cited constrained DRAM and NAND availability, shortages in certain CPUs, and insufficient disk-drive supply.

The concern is reinforced by the way nearline storage supply is being contracted. Seagate said that most of its Nearline HDD supply is allocated through existing long-term agreements through 2028, while some customers are planning demand for 2029 and beyond. Data centers account for about 90% of Seagate’s exabyte shipments. Western Digital said most of its 2027 supply is already covered by long-term agreements, with portions of 2028 supply and a small share of 2029 supply also contracted. Its customers are seeking to secure additional supply for 2030 and 2031.

Lead times for Nearline HDDs had previously extended from several weeks to more than 52 weeks, according to TrendForce. Western Digital expects exabyte demand to grow at a CAGR of more than 25% over the next five years. Separately, JPMorgan forecasts a 63% CAGR in HBM bit demand in 2026–2028 and a 92% CAGR in demand for DRAM/SOCAMM used in AI servers over the same period.

For data-center operators, the development suggests that material constraints in AI deployments could broaden from compute accelerators to the memory and mass-storage layers supporting large data estates and AI inference. This could increase the value of multi-year supply agreements, diversified sourcing and earlier storage procurement planning. The available information does not quantify any actual effect on HDD prices, physical delivery volumes, data-center construction, capacity commissioning or operations.

Почему это важно

The supply-chain constraint for AI infrastructure may be extending beyond accelerators to high-performance memory and bulk storage. For data-center operators and AI-system suppliers, longer-term HDD contracting could lengthen procurement cycles, increase the need for earlier storage-capacity planning, and create pricing pressure, although no direct pricing or delivery-volume impact was disclosed.
