Cooling and Backup Failure Disrupts Basilicata Regional IT Services

Редакция ЦОД:Главное

A data-center incident in Potenza, southern Italy, disrupted Basilicata’s core regional IT systems on 27–28 September, including services supporting medical appointments. The regional government attributed the outage to an anomaly in the primary cooling system and the unsuccessful start of a backup system, while ruling out a cyberattack.

  • A Potenza data-center incident halted core Basilicata regional IT systems on 27–28 September.
  • The investigation attributed the disruption to a primary cooling anomaly and failure of a backup system to start.
  • The regional medical appointment platform resumed online operations by 30 September.
  • Authorities excluded a cyberattack and reported no evidence of unauthorised access or personal-data leakage.
  • The incident underlines the need to test backup cooling and related resilience chains, not simply deploy redundant equipment.

A failure at a data center in Potenza disrupted key IT systems operated by Italy’s Basilicata region during 27–28 September, affecting public-sector digital services including the regional Centro Unico di Prenotazione medical appointment platform.

According to the regional investigation, an anomaly in the facility’s primary cooling system was compounded by the failure of a backup system to start. The resulting condition caused instability in data-storage systems and temporarily made some services unavailable. The Centro Unico di Prenotazione was able to resume online operations by 30 September.

The outage also affected administrative processes, including certain student applications, and led to the postponement of a regional council meeting. Basilicata authorities said they found no evidence of unauthorised access or personal-data leakage and excluded a cyberattack as the cause.

For data-center operators serving critical public services, the event is a practical example of the dependency chain between cooling, storage availability and application continuity. It suggests that resilience measures should extend beyond installed redundancy: backup cooling and associated systems need to be tested regularly under conditions that validate their ability to assume load when the primary path fails.

One source estimates that Italy has about 200 data-center facilities, concentrated mainly in northern and central urban areas. The estimate is contextual rather than a defined market count, but it highlights the relevance of operational resilience across regional infrastructure outside the country’s principal data-center clusters.

Почему это важно

The incident illustrates how a primary cooling fault combined with ineffective backup readiness can propagate through storage systems to interrupt critical public-facing applications. It reinforces the operational importance of resilient cooling architectures, redundant paths and regular testing of standby systems.
