ByteDance has reportedly secured a $29.6 billion syndicated loan from 28 banks to support investment in AI infrastructure, including data-center expansion. The facility has a three-year term and may be extended to a maximum of five years.
Chinese banks account for the largest share of commitments. Fifteen Chinese lenders committed a combined $18.9 billion, representing 64% of the final loan amount. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China committed $3 billion, while Bank of China committed $2.5 billion and China Construction Bank committed $1.5 billion. HSBC was among the largest foreign-bank participants, with a $1.5 billion commitment.
Media reports link the financing to ByteDance’s consideration of annual capital expenditure of up to $70 billion this year for data-center expansion and other AI infrastructure. That figure is described as a plan under consideration rather than approved or incurred spending.
For the data-center and power-infrastructure market, the facility could increase ByteDance’s ability to finance AI compute, data-center and associated infrastructure deployment. The potential procurement effect remains unclear: no specific data-center projects, locations, MW or GW capacity, construction schedules, or allocation of the loan proceeds to data centers have been disclosed.
The reported transaction follows a previous $10.8 billion overseas loan raised by ByteDance in 2024 from more than 20 international and Chinese banks.
The financing could strengthen ByteDance’s capacity to fund a rapid build-out of AI compute and data-center infrastructure. However, the reported spending plan does not disclose the allocation between data centers, other AI assets and other uses, so its direct effect on delivered data-center capacity cannot be quantified.
