  • Arelion completed a live trial on its 500-kilometre Amsterdam–London optical route.
  • The trial used Nokia open line systems, CHMQ6 modules and ICE-X 400G and 800G ZR+ coherent pluggable optics.
  • The source reported approximately 21% more usable optical spectrum on existing Arelion fibre.
  • The result may offer a route to expand data-centre interconnection capacity without new cable deployment.

Arelion has completed a live optical-network field trial between Amsterdam and London using Nokia equipment, targeting higher-capacity connectivity for data-centre and other bandwidth-intensive workloads.

The trial was conducted on Arelion’s 500-kilometre route between the two cities. It used Nokia’s 1830 Global Express Super C and Super L open line system, CHMQ6 modules, ICE-X 400G and 800G ZR+ coherent pluggable optics, and client splitting.

According to the source, the configuration demonstrated an approximately 21% expansion in usable optical spectrum. Arelion said this could allow more traffic to be transported over fibre it already owns, rather than requiring new cable deployment.

The test is relevant to wholesale, neoscaler and enterprise customers requiring scalable connectivity between data centres. Arelion also links the additional network capability to its Managed Optical Fiber Network offering for dedicated managed optical connectivity between data centres and other digital infrastructure.

As AI deployments raise demand for inter-site and backbone bandwidth, the result points to a potential approach for upgrading transport capacity on installed fibre. More broadly, it could reinforce the role of high-speed coherent pluggables, modular transponder technology and open line systems in data-centre connectivity infrastructure. The source also associates pluggable-based solutions with lower optical-transport energy use, but provides no measured energy-performance data.

Почему это важно

For data-centre operators and network customers supporting AI workloads, the trial indicates a potential route to increase inter-site and long-haul transport capacity without deploying new cable infrastructure. This could support faster capacity upgrades on existing fibre, although the reported result is specific to this route and trial configuration.
