Singapore-based startup Amperesand is developing modular solid-state transformers intended to convert medium-voltage grid supply directly to 800 VDC for AI data centers. The company says it is working with early customers, including an unnamed large hyperscale provider, and is deploying one unit at a national laboratory following testing.

  • Amperesand is developing modular solid-state transformers for direct medium-voltage AC-to-800 VDC conversion in AI data centers.
  • The company says its system can provide bidirectional power control and integrate batteries or local generation.
  • An unnamed hyperscaler has reportedly participated in national-laboratory testing; one unit is being deployed there.
  • Amperesand targets 98.5% efficiency at full load, but this remains a company-stated target.
  • The disclosed activity indicates an early-stage deployment rather than proven commercial scale.

Amperesand is positioning its modular solid-state transformer platform as an 800 VDC power architecture for AI data centers. The Singapore-headquartered company says the equipment can directly convert medium-voltage AC supply—cited at 13.8 kV to 35 kV AC—to high-voltage DC, while providing bidirectional energy-flow control and integration with batteries or local generation.

The proposed configuration is intended to support AI loads during grid disturbances by drawing from batteries and managing medium-voltage variations. The company’s chief executive has stated a full-load efficiency target of 98.5%. This is a company target rather than an independently verified operating result.

Amperesand manufactures power stages, power-electronics converters and solid-state transformer systems in Reno, Nevada. According to its CEO, an unnamed large hyperscale provider is among its early customers. The parties conducted testing at a national laboratory in 2026, and Amperesand is deploying one unit there. The company has not identified the customer or laboratory, and the activity should not be treated as confirmation of commercial operation at a data-center site.

The CEO also said that an unnamed conventional electrical OEM has made a minority investment in Amperesand and is partnering with the company across several hyperscalers. The identities, scope and commercial terms of those relationships have not been disclosed.

For data-center operators, the proposition is an integrated conversion and energy-management layer that could potentially replace part of the conventional transformer-rectifier-UPS chain. This could matter as AI facilities place greater demands on power density, supply quality, resilience and battery-backed continuity. However, the disclosed evidence points to early-customer engagement, laboratory testing and a single-unit deployment, rather than scaled deployments or serial supply.

Почему это важно

Rising AI power density and volatile compute loads are increasing requirements for power quality, resilience and conversion efficiency. If such systems can integrate functions now spread across transformer, rectifier and UPS equipment, they could alter power-system design at the interface between the grid, microgrid and AI racks; commercial adoption, however, remains unproven.
