Chinese partners have been announced as investors in $2.28 billion of data-center and digital-currency production infrastructure in the Kungrad and Takhiatash districts of Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan. Separately, the first phase of Linkwise’s modular intelligent computing center in Takhiatash is reported to have entered operation.
- $2.28 billion in Chinese investment has been announced for data centers and digital-currency production infrastructure in Kungrad and Takhiatash.
- A separate data center is planned in Takhtakupyr.
- Linkwise’s reported $150 million first phase in Takhiatash is described as launched; this figure applies to the phase, not the full facility.
- The region’s power build-out includes a 1.5 GW wind project under construction in Kungrad, but no direct linkage to the data-center projects has been stated.
- No IT capacity, project schedule or detailed split of the announced digital-infrastructure investment has been disclosed.
Karakalpakstan authorities have outlined a digital-infrastructure investment package under which Chinese partners are to invest $2.28 billion in data centers and infrastructure for digital-currency production in Kungrad and Takhiatash. The allocation of that total between data centers and digital-currency infrastructure has not been disclosed.
A separate data center is planned in Takhtakupyr. In Takhiatash, the first phase of Linkwise’s modular intelligent computing center has reportedly been launched, with phase CAPEX of $150 million. The available information does not disclose the facility’s IT capacity, the number of sites involved, delivery schedule, named investors behind the broader $2.28 billion commitment, or the future phases of the Linkwise project.
The proposals are emerging alongside substantial power-sector activity in the region. Construction has started on ACWA Power’s 1.5 GW wind project in Kungrad, with reported project cost of $2.6 billion. Associated energy infrastructure includes 1,500 km of high-voltage lines, three new substations and upgrades to two existing substations. Two wind plants with combined capacity of 300 MW and a 100 MW energy-storage system have also reportedly been launched in Karauzak.
These parallel developments could provide the basis for a larger power-intensive digital cluster, combining data-center capacity with digital-currency infrastructure. However, the source does not establish a contractual or direct supply link between the wind generation, transmission and storage projects and the announced data-center developments. The storage project is specified only in MW, with no energy capacity or duration disclosed.
If executed, the projects could position Karakalpakstan as a significant location for power-intensive digital loads in Uzbekistan. The critical issue for the data-center market will be whether the proposed facilities are practically matched with available grid capacity, generation and operating conditions for digital-currency infrastructure; no IT load has been disclosed.
